Number 74A was first used on a service from Clondalkin (Bawnogue) to Tallaght (The Square) via Clondalkin and Belgard Road. It commenced operation on October 22nd 1990. The service did not operate on Sundays. A complimentary service 74 also operated between Lucan and The Square during the same dates. It last operated on April 27th 1991.
Commencing operation on May 21st 2007, the number 74A was used for a service between Eden Quay and Stocking Avenue operating via Rathmines, Rathgar, Rathfarnham and Ballyboden. The route was introduced alongside sister route 74 as a peak time service in conjunction with the Transport 21 initiative. On September 30th 2007, the 74A was extended to a new terminus at Macken Street (set-down). The first pick-up stop was on Pearse Street. This extension was accompanied by a 7 day schedule with a much improved frequency. On January 18th 2009, the 74A was extended from the Macken / Pearse Street terminus to Britain Quay. Some early morning services operated from Ringsend (Bus Depot) via Pearse Street not serving Britain Quay.
From December 19th 2009, due to traffic congestion the 74 and 74A will operate from Britain Quay via Sir John Rogerson’s Quay, Lombard Street, Sandwith Street, Pearse Street and back on to normal route, returning via Townsend Street, Tara Street, Butt Bridge, Custom House Quay, Samuel Beckett Bridge and Sir John Rogerson’s Quay to Britain Quay on weekdays. On weekends buses will operate from Ringsend Road (Bus Depot) via Pearse Street to normal route, returning via Townsend Street, Tara Street, Butt Bridge, Custom House Quay, Samuel Beckett Bridge, Macken Street and Pearse Street to Ringsend Road (Bus Depot).
As part of Network Direct, the 74A was merged with the 15B to create a new service (utilising number 15B). The 74A last operated on December 17th 2011.
