The 51A service from Eden Quay to Leas Cross via Drumcondra, Griffith Avenue, Ballymun and the Boot Inn was renumbered as 60 in 1936. There were several short working between Eden Quay and the Boot Inn which were later withdrawn, probably war time economies. A Mass Bus also operated on Sundays, departing Leas Cross at 0810 and returning from Ballymun at 0915. In 1950 two extra services to the Boot Inn only were introduced, these were later extended to Leas Cross also. Except for some minor departure time changes the schedule hardly changed between the 1950's and 1981.
Utilising single-deckers, it operated from Summerhill Bus Depot and by 1947 was integrated with the 41 in 1948. The 41 received double-deckers and these were probably used on the 60 going forward. When the two extra journeys to the Boot Inn only (later extended to Leas Cross) were introduced in 1950, these were operated by Clontarf utilising N type single deckers. Double deckers were put on these journeys later in the 1950's, but they continued to be operated by Clontarf until the late 1960's or early 1970's.
In 1981 a new schedule on the 41 saw the introduction of the 41C, and also changes to the 60. The late night journey and mass bus were withdrawn, the Sunday frequency was reduced to two journeys while the 0800 and 1515 departures from Leas Cross would now operate via Swords. An arrangement was made that passengers could board at Boot Inn and travel via Leas X and Swords without paying twice. In 1987 the road from Ballymun to Boot Inn was closed to facilitate the new runway at the airport. This added about three or four miles to the route, as the buses had to go all around the new perimeter road.
In July 1990, the OPO timetable saw the end to reverse termini, as a result of this the 60 was permanently re-routed to Eden Quay via Swords. The evening journey (1835 from Eden Quay) was withdrawn, Saturday reduced to two journeys, and Sunday service withdrawn. The outbound route was also changed to operate via Swords Road and Forest Road instead of via Ballymun. In 1998, when the 41, 41B and 41C became Cityswift services, the 60 was withdrawn. It last operated on June 13th 1998.
Dublin Bus began operation of the 60 on October 16th 2022 following the commencement of the G-Spine. It operates from Red Cow Luas Interchange to Sir John Rogerson's Quay via Monastery Road, Clondalkin, 9th Lock Road, Station Road, Cherry Orchard, Ballyfermot, Decies Road, Kilmainham, Heuston Station, The Quays and Samuel Beckett Bridge.
