July 9th 1949 was the last day of tram operation between Nelson Pillar and Blackrock. The next day the bus service began between Nelson Pillar and Blackrock (Proby Square). In 1951 the City Centre terminus moved three times, firstly to D'Olier Street on June 19th, secondly to College Street on July 12th and finally back to Nelson Pillar on August 5th. On August 1st 1952, the service was extended from Proby Square to Yankee Terrace.
In 1966 the service was extended from Yankee Terrace to Castlebyrne Park. On October 29th 1967, the City Centre terminus moved from Nelson Pillar to Parnell Square East. On August 17th 1970, the City Centre terminus moved from Parnell Square East to Eden Quay. On December 15th 1975, the service was extended from Castlebyrne Park to New Link Road (Opp. Abbey Park). On December 13th 1987, the service was converted to One Person operation. The last day of operation was March 19th 1989.
As part of Bus Connects, Dublin Bus began operating the 6 between Lower Abbey Street and Howth Station on June 27th 2021.
